ASUS Against Discrimination
March 18th, 2021
“We are saddened and outraged at anti-Asian racism’s continued presence in our community and country. Several incidents, in the past and recently, have demonstrated that bigotry and racism directed at Asian individuals is deeply rooted in the Queen’s community. Anyone who takes part in such bigoted conduct is not welcome in ASUS or the Arts and Science community.”

“In addition to anti-Semitic messaging, the attack involved Islamaphobia, racism, sexism, and sexual-violence related content. While we were unaware of those elements of the attack at the time of our first statement, it is important to acknowledge the marginalized groups affected and hurt by this attack. ASUS stands firmly in its position against discrimination directed towards all members of our community. No student attending a Queen’s-sponsored event should ever feel uncomfortable or victimized based on their identity.”

“We reiterate that there is no place in this campus or community for the horrific acts of anti-Semitism that took place on Tuesday night, and were also brought forward in a recent Journal article. This isn’t the first such incident that has happened at Queen’s, and the record of addressing anti-Semitism at this institution and by organizations like our own must be improved.”

“We have been saddened and appalled at the stories that have come from the Instagram account @stolenbysmith in the past week. We are inspired by the courage of Kelly Weiling Zou, the account’s sole creator and manager, and the contributors who have shared their experiences, which we know are not limited to one program.”
“ASUS and the Faculty of Arts and Science undoubtedly have extensive work to do in making this campus a safe place for QTBIPOC students, students with disabilities and students of marginalized identities.”

“We commit ourselves at ASUS to anti-oppression work in all of its forms in the weeks, months, year ahead and beyond, as we aim towards justice and dismantle systemic racism in all its forms from our campus and community. We call upon the Queen’s Faculty of Arts and Science, the University Administration, and other student governments to stand beside us in this fight, alongside the countless BIPOC activists and leaders to ignite change, for a campus that is inclusive and welcoming towards its students.”
“The Arts and Science community must do more. That starts with us.”
To our BIPOC friends, peers, family, and community, we see you, we hear you and we stand with you.
In addition, we’d like to provide these resources we’ve aggregated to support our BIPOC students, as well as for non-BIPOC students as they commit to the journey of allyship. Much more work lies ahead.
