About ASURF
Established in 2017, the Arts and Science Research Fund (ASURF) was implemented to foster a community amongst undergraduate scholars and promote a greater investment in undergraduate research. The Faculty of Arts and Science has pledged to match all of the funds raised by the $3.75 opt-out student fee. This meant that in 2021-2022 academic year, $64,450 was awarded to 27 undergraduate student researchers.
Through this partnership between ASUS and the Faculty of Arts and Science, ASURF will assist in funding research projects at the undergraduate level. This fund is open to undergraduate research of all kinds and creativity is encouraged, no project is too small or too large. This fund will support research in all ways from necessary materials for an experiment to travel expenses to poster printing fees — the goal is to make pursuing one’s passions in research accessible to all students.

Who is eligible to apply?
Arts and Science, Computing, Con-Ed, and Kinesiology Students must have paid the ASURF student fee to be eligible to apply.
How can my work be publicized?
If you are looking for opportunities to have your work seen, consider publishing in the Queen's Science Undergraduate Research Journal - submissions and information at qsurj@asus.queensu.ca.
ASUS may also be in touch with further publicization opportunities throughout the year.
What can ASURF fund?
ASURF can fund research materials, software, conference expenses, and a multitude of other research related costs.
The ASURF may be used to cover the $1000 direct cost to a supervisor associated with the USSRF program, provided that the applicant submits a funding request and can confirm their enrolment in the program.
ASURF can also be used to fund social science related expenses, including survey or focus group compensation, software purchase, conference travel or entrance, and in some cases, a stipend.

How will my funding be distributed?
Once awarded, all funds will be distributed by the method of the applicant’s choice. Funding allocated for research grants will be distributed over two periods. Upon being deemed by the committee as a successful applicant, applicants will receive 50% of their funding allocation. Upon completion of their research project and submission of a report to the ASUS President outlining their project and how they used such funds, applicants will receive the remaining 50% of the allocation.
How will my proposal be assessed?
Your proposal will be assessed by a committee, using the following criteria:
- The degree to which the research project or position will benefit research in their specific field of study;
- The degree to which an individual student will benefit from the research grant;
- The quality and effort put into the application;
- Demonstration of financial need;
- Justification for research grant deservedness;
- Whether the research project in question possesses tangible and realistic applications for grant money;
- Whether or not the research project is original in its nature.
