ASUS Elections:
ASUS holds two elections per year. The first election, called the ASUS By-Election, is run in October. Positions typically elected in these elections are those that were not elected at the previous winter elections, or for positions reserved for first years. Most positions are elected in the Winter Elections of the previous year. The typical pattern for elections is as follows:
Winter Elections:
- Executive (1 team – President and Vice President)
- ASUS Reps to the AMS (6 positions)
- Year Society Executive (3 President and Vice-President Teams – one per graduating class)
- Permanent Year Society Executive (1 President and Vice-President Team from the graduating class)
- ASUS Senators (4 positions – 3 one-year, 1 two-year)
- ASUS International Student Rep
Fall Elections:
- First Year ASUS Rep to the AMS
- Any Year ASUS Rep to the AMS
- First Year Society Executive (1 President and Vice-President team)
ELECTED POSITIONS DESCRIPTIONS:
ASUS Executive
The executive of the society shall consist of a President and Vice-President who will ensure the smooth running of the society throughout their term. The executive shall run and be elected as a team. Any candidates interested in this position are urged to talk to the current President and Vice-President Rico Garcia and Duncan Peterson before considering their candidacy for the position.
ASUS Representative to the AMS
There are a total of 8 ASUS Reps to the AMS, which in addition to the Executive gives ASUS the largest vote on AMS Assembly. Their job is to represent the interests of ASUS and Arts & Science students to AMS Assembly every other Thursday, and to report the business of the AMS to ASUS Assembly on remaining Thursdays. Assemblies are the legislative bodies of both organizations, where approximately 40 elected student representatives make sure Constitution and Policy are best serving the societies and their constituents. If you are interested in debating and the governmental process, or take an interest in the issues facing students at Queens, this is your chance to have your voice heard and learn more about the university.
TIME COMMITMENT: Every Thursday night from 7 – 10 pm
Year Society Executives
Every Class/Year has a President and Vice-President who are voting members of ASUS Assembly and represent their year on the main legislative body of the Arts & Science student government. They run as a team and are elected at the beginning of February, at which point they hire an executive committee of approximately 8 members of the first year class. Together, they plan events, fundraise and discuss issues that affect their specific year of students.
TIME COMMITMENT: Every other Thursday from 7-10 pm + weekly meetings
ASUS Senator
The duties of an ASUS Student Senator shall include the following, but shall not necessarily be limited thereby:
i) to be a voting member of ASUS Assembly, the University Senate, and the Faculty Board of Arts and Science;
ii) to be available to sit on ASUS and Senate Standing Committees.
The Senate is the senior academic governing body of the University. ASUS Student Senators bring concerns to the Senate from ASUS Assembly, but their main responsibilities are to vote on academic policy with the best interests of the University in mind and to report to Assembly on Senate proceedings.
TIME COMMITMENT: Every other Thursday from 7-10 pm + weekly meetings
