5K Run/Walk for ASUS Autism Partnership and ASUS Heart and Stroke

The weather is finally getting warmer and what better way to spend some time outside than to go for a run/walk for charity! This year, the ASUS Autism Partnership and the ASUS Heart and Stroke Foundation have COMBINED their annual run to bring you one perfect day of outdo…or activity.

There will be a $15 minimum registration fee, donations will be accepted the day of!
An extra $10 for an Autism Partnership T-shirt ($15 for a T-shirt with team name)

W.J. Barnes Teaching Excellence Award – Due March 21st

The W.J. Barnes Teaching Excellence Award of the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society shall be considered the highest tribute the Society can pay to an individual for teaching excellence. The award shall be presented to deserving members of the Faculty of Arts and Science who have made a significant contribution to teaching. Each recipient of an award shall be presented with a plaque at the Society Annual General Meeting, and every effort should be made to widely recognize the achievements of the winners and all nominees.

Accessibility Queen’s -Town Hall

Everyone is invited to come to this Town Hall to hear about the new Accessibility Framework that encourages the entire Queen’s community to share in the accountability for achieving accessibility priorities under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.

Queen’s has identified five priority areas: customer service, information & communications, employment, built environment, and education, training and awareness.
Key to the Framework’s success will be ongoing communication, consultation, and collaboration with the Queen’s and broader communities – especially persons with disabilities.

You are invited to participate in a collaborative session where advice and recommendations can be brought forward and innovations formulated towards the development of an Accessibility Strategy that reflects the commitment Queen’s has to the interests and needs of persons with disabilities.

Memorial tree plantings scheduled

Members of the Queen’s community are invited to attend tree planting ceremonies in memory of students Allison Borges and Andrew Lloyd, who died last year.

Allison Borges tree dedication

Sunday, March 18 at 2 pm.

Andrew Lloyd tree dedication

Saturday, March 24 at 1:30 pm.

The trees will be planted near the Summerhill tennis courts and will be marked with memorial plaques.
University Chaplain Brian Yealland will officiate and family members will be present.

GPA Town Hall Meeting for Arts and Science Students

Since a number of issues have been raised about the change to a letter grading system and the use of the GPA the Faculty of Arts and Science has arranged a town hall meeting for Arts and Science students on Thursday 22^nd March from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Walter Light Hall where the Dean and Associate Deans will be present to hear your concerns.

We are already aware of many of the issues involved in this change and have endeavoured to mitigate problems arising from it. However, the town hall meeting is an opportunity to express any concerns that have not been previously addressed.

If you have a specific issue affecting your own situation you should submit it in an email to f2deans@queensu.ca where it can be assessed most effectively.

ASUS ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
The ASUS Achievement Crest was created to award those individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society over their years at Queen’s. One has to accumulate 10 points in order to be eligible for the crest. The crest will be awarded at the Annual General Meeting in March. The crest is awarded on a basis of points;

To recognize exemplary work within the Society, above and beyond that recognized by the ASUS Achievement Award.
The Distinguished Achievement Award will be granted to those individuals who have accumulated five (5) additional points to the requirements of the Achievement Award, based on the points breakdown above. The presentation will be made at the Society’s Annual General Meeting. A former recipient of the Achievement Award is eligible for the Distinguished Achievement Award as well.

Crohns & Colitis GUTSY WALK!

On Sunday, March 25th, 2012, the Queen’s University Crohn’s and Colitis Committee (ASUS) will host a Gutsy Walk around the campus. Join us in walking, running, cycling, or even longboarding the 5km. Our event will finish outside of Stauffer Library, where… there will be a BBQ. Join us and ASUS President, Rico Garcia for this great event!

Let’s show Canada how Gutsy we Gaels really are! Together, we will FIND THE CURE !

Polar Bear Dip!

Want to do something crazy and support a great cause? Then this Saturday at 2pm come to the ASUS Good Times Diner’s first ever Polar Bear Dip! All you have to do is collect pledges then show up at Lake Ontario at Albert Street and go for a quick dip. Or if you want to support this cause but don’t want to brave the water then sponsor another participant. All proceeds go towards the ASUS Good Times Diner, a completely student-run soup kitchen that serves to low-income residents in the Kingston community on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. New Chair Positions Available! Applications due March 12th

The ASUS Services Commission has two new Chair positions we’re looking to fill for the 2012-2013 year!

We are looking for a Sponsorship/Promotions Chair and an Operations Chair to spearhead the organization of the 2nd annual Move In Day Sale! The Move In Day Sale was first done this past September on Move In Day. It is meant to be a day where first-year students would be able to purchase items that upper years have suggested to be “essential to first year survival” or “something they wished they had brought”, as well as provide upper year support to incoming students with personal experiences, suggestions, etc.

The two Chairs will work in conjunction with the incoming Services Commissioner to organize the sale. This position is approximately a 6-month position (at max) from April – October (you do not have to remain in Kingston over the summer).

If you are interested in getting involved in easing these first years into university life, and gaining valuable networking and business/managerial experience, fill out an application by 4pm on March 12th to the ASUS Core!
