Rico Garcia (ArtSci 13’) is a third year Economics major/Global Development Studies minor who was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico. Since his first year, Rico Garcia decided to get involved with the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society (ASUS) by successfully running for President of the ASUS 2013 Year Society. Aiming to make first year an unforgettable experience for the class of 2013, he organized different events and fundraisers, such as the Valentine’s Day Formal, leaving the 2013 Year Society in the best financial status any Year Society had been in years. Later that year, ASUS Assembly elected Rico Garcia as a two-year Director for the ASUS Board of Directors. Such position provided him with an in depth understanding of the Society’s finances and long term goals. Similarly, by the end of his first year, Rico Garcia was hired as the Deputy Commissioner of Internal Affairs. It was during his months as Deputy (position he had to resign from to pursue a Senatorial race) when he learned the most about ASUS’ Constitution and Policy. In 2010-2011, as an ASUS two-year Senator, Rico Garcia represented student interests at the University Senate, University Council, the Senate Orientation Activities Review Board (SOARB), the Arts and Science Faculty Board and ASUS Assembly. Moreover, he has also been involved with ASUS as the Co-Chair of the ASUS Remembrance Day Committee, as a GAEL during Orientation Week, as a committee member for committees like the ASUS Grants Committee, ASUS Summer Camps Hiring Committee and the ASUS Student Initiative Fund Committee. Ultimately, in addition to his involvement with ASUS and student government, Rico Garcia also hosts a weekly radio show at CFRC, has attended Queen’s Model Parliament, worked as a Research Assistant for a Professor in the Spanish Department and as a Student Athlete Academic Mentor. Rico is now the President of ASUS and he looks forward to an amazing year. Feel free to add him as a friend on Facebook (Rico Garcia) or follow him on Twitter (Rico_P_Garcia) if you would like to get to know him better.

Duncan Peterson (ArtSci ‘11) is a biology major/psychology minor who was born in Vancouver and raised in Nanaimo, British Columbia. In first year, Duncan was primarily involved in a variety of residence committees and activities, but became increasingly interested in ASUS through his involvement with being a Gael during Orientation Week of his second year. After being a Gael, Duncan learned about all of the opportunities that ASUS had to offer and became the Co-Chair of the W.J. Barnes Teaching Award. Under his leadership, the W.J. Barnes committee received the largest number of nominations compared to several years prior. As his second year came to an end, Duncan wanted to continue his involvement with ASUS while taking on a larger leadership role and time commitment. This lead him to apply to be the Deputy Academics Commissioner for ASUS. In this role, Duncan continued to apply his leadership and organization skills to the W.J. Barnes Teaching Award, the MindFind Tutoring program, the Arts and Science Faculty Board, and to the Department Student Council Assembly. Along with the then current Academics Commissioner, Duncan helped to initiate and execute several useful initiatives, including the hiring and development of two student directors to assist in the MindFind Tutoring service. After a year in his role of Deputy Academics Commissioner, ASUS awarded Duncan the Volunteer of the Year Award for his dedication, hard work, and contributions to the Society. The Deputy Commissioner position gave Duncan the necessary leadership and management skills to be the successful candidate chosen for the role of Academics Commissioner for ASUS during his fourth year at Queen’s. As Academics Commissioner, Duncan worked hard to fully represent the academic interests of Arts and Science students at both ASUS Assembly and Arts and Science Faculty Board. Duncan also oversaw five committees that fall under the Academics portfolio, and organized and acted as a resource for the thirty Department Student Councils that are in the Faculty of Arts and Science. He is now the Vice-President of ASUS and is extremely excited for the year to come.
